House edge, perfect basic strategy

0.33%

How it works

  1. Set the table rules: decks, soft 17, doubling, surrender, peek and payout.
  2. The chart is recalculated for exactly those rules; cells that change from the standard game get a corner notch.
  3. Tap or arrow-key to any cell to see the expected result of every legal play and the reason for the best one.
  4. Copy the link to share these rules, or print a one-page card to take with you.

What the maths says

Each cell compares the expected value of every legal play for that hand against that dealer upcard, then shows the best one. The dealer's outcomes are worked out exactly for the cards left in the shoe; your hand is averaged over every two-card way of making the total. Results match published composition-dependent figures to within a few hundredths of a percent for 4 to 8 decks.

With the standard rules (6 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double any two, double after split, late surrender, no resplit aces, split to 4 hands, dealer peeks, blackjack pays 3:2), perfect play leaves the house 0.33%. Small rule changes move that number more than any decision you make: if the dealer hits soft 17 it becomes 0.53%, without surrender 0.40%, and a 6:5 blackjack payout pushes it to 1.69%.

A dealer showing 6 busts about 42% of the time; showing a 10, only about 21%. That gap is why so many cells flip between the 2-6 and 7-A columns. Some cells are close calls: hard 12 against a 2 is worth -25.4 units per 100 if you hit and -29.3 if you stand. Getting it wrong costs little; getting the big cells wrong (doubling 11, splitting 8s) costs a lot.

The chart minimises the house edge. It does not remove it, and no betting pattern or chart change does.
