Roulette pays 35 to 1 on a single number, 17 to 1 on a split, 11 to 1 on a street, 8 to 1 on a corner, 5 to 1 on a six line, 2 to 1 on a dozen or column and 1 to 1 on even-money bets like red or black. Every one of those payouts is set just below the true odds, so on a single-zero wheel each bet costs 2.70% of what you stake and on a double-zero wheel 5.26%.
The tables below give the payout, the number of pockets covered, the exact probability on both wheels, the house edge and the expected loss per $100 wagered for every standard bet, plus the French call bets with the exact pockets they cover. All numbers are exact outputs of the site’s roulette engine.
- Single number payout, both wheels
- 35 to 1
- Chance of one number, single zero (2.70%)
- 1 in 37
- Even-money win chance, single zero
- 48.65%
- Expected loss per $100 on almost any single-zero bet
- $2.70

The payout and probability table
“Pays 35 to 1” means a winning $1 bet returns $35 profit plus your $1 stake. Probabilities are shown as an exact fraction of the pockets on the wheel: 37 on a single-zero (European or French) wheel, 38 on a double-zero (American) wheel. A dash means that bet is not offered on that wheel.

A quick way to read any line: the payout you would need for a zero-cost bet is (pockets on the wheel / pockets covered) minus 1. On a single-zero wheel a single number would need 36 to 1 to be fair and pays 35. A dozen would need 37/12 - 1, about 2.08 to 1, and pays 2.

On a French table with La Partage, the even-money row drops to 1.35% ($1.35 per $100). Every other row is unchanged.
Source: Site roulette engine (betEdge), exact
Two rows break the pattern, and both are worth remembering:
- The five-number bet (American only) pays 6 to 1 on five pockets. Over 38 spins at $1 it wins five times (+$30) and loses 33 times (-$33), a net -$3, so 3/38 or 7.89%. It is the most expensive standard bet on any wheel.
- French even-money bets lose only half their stake on zero under La Partage, which halves their edge to 1.35%. How that rule and En Prison work is covered in our guide to how the single and double zero wheels differ.
Myth: outside bets have better odds, so they cost less
Red or black wins 18 times in 37; a single number wins once in 37. But each is paid in proportion, so both lose $2.70 per $100 wagered over time. What differs is volatility: the even-money bet gives small, frequent results, the single number long losing runs and rare big wins.
Payout against probability
Plot every bet’s payout against its chance of winning and the bets fall on one smooth curve per wheel. That is what “every bet has the same edge” looks like: the casino did not price any bet as a bargain. The double-zero curve sits just below the single-zero curve at every payout, which is the 00 pocket at work.

Inside bets
Inside bets go on the numbers themselves.
- Straight up: one chip in the middle of a number. 1 pocket, pays 35 to 1.
- Split: on the line between two adjacent numbers, such as 8 and 11. 2 pockets, pays 17 to 1.
- Street: on the outer edge of a row of three, such as 25-26-27. 3 pockets, pays 11 to 1.
- Corner (square): where four numbers meet, such as 32-33-35-36. 4 pockets, pays 8 to 1.
- Six line (double street): on the outer edge where two streets meet, such as 13 to 18. 6 pockets, pays 5 to 1.
Bets that include zero
- Trio, often called the basket on single-zero tables: 0-1-2 or 0-2-3, 3 pockets, pays 11 to 1 like a street. Edge 2.70%.
- First four: 0-1-2-3, single-zero tables only, 4 pockets, pays 8 to 1 like a corner. Edge 2.70%.
- Five-number (top line): 0-00-1-2-3, double-zero tables only, 5 pockets, pays 6 to 1. Edge 7.89%.
Naming varies between tables and countries: “basket” and “top line” are used for more than one of these, so check the payout printed in the game rules rather than the name.
Outside bets
- Dozen: 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36. 12 pockets, pays 2 to 1.
- Column: one of the three long rows, chips in the “2 to 1” box at the end. 12 pockets, pays 2 to 1.
- Even-money: red, black, odd, even, 1-18 or 19-36. 18 pockets, pays 1 to 1. Zero (and 00) loses all of them, unless a French rule applies.
Call bets and neighbours: the exact pockets
Call bets are announced to the dealer on single-zero tables and cover a slice of the wheel rather than a block of the layout. Each one is just a bundle of ordinary splits, straights, trios and corners, so each carries the usual 2.70% edge. The chip placements below are as described in Wikipedia’s roulette article; the results per pocket are computed by the engine for one unit per chip.
- Voisins du zéro (neighbours of zero), 9 chips, 17 pockets: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25. Two chips on the 0-2-3 trio, one each on the splits 4-7, 12-15, 18-21, 19-22 and 32-35, and two on the 25-26-28-29 corner.
- Tiers du cylindre (thirds of the wheel), 6 chips, 12 pockets: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33. One chip each on the splits 5-8, 10-11, 13-16, 23-24, 27-30 and 33-36.
- Orphelins (orphans), 5 chips, 8 pockets: 17, 34, 6 and 1, 20, 14, 31, 9. One chip straight up on 1, and one each on the splits 6-9, 14-17, 17-20 and 31-34.
- Jeu zéro (zero game), 4 chips, 7 pockets: 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15. One chip each on the splits 0-3, 12-15 and 32-35, and one straight up on 26.
- Neighbours of a number, 5 chips, 5 pockets: the number plus the two pockets on each side of it on the wheel, each as a straight-up bet. Neighbours of 17 on a single-zero wheel are 2, 25, 17, 34 and 6.

| Voisins du zéro | 45.95% |
| Tiers du cylindre | 32.43% |
| Orphelins | 21.62% |
| Jeu zéro | 18.92% |
The voisins bet wins on 45.95% of spins, almost as often as an even-money bet on a single-zero wheel (48.65%), yet it costs exactly the same 2.70% as a single number. The orphelins bet has two “best” pockets, 1 and 17: 1 carries a straight-up chip, and 17 sits in two splits.
Fact: call bets are a convenience, not a discount
A call bet saves you placing up to nine chips by hand. It does not change the price. Because every component is a standard bet paid at standard odds, the bundle’s edge is the single-zero edge, 2.70%, to the decimal.
What these numbers do not tell you
The edge is an average over a very long run. Over one evening, the result is mostly luck, and the payout you choose decides how wild that luck is. A 35 to 1 bet can be well ahead or well behind after an hour; an even-money bet usually lands nearer the average. No arrangement of bets changes the average, and that includes progressions: the systems themselves are tested in our simulation of nine betting systems.
If you want to know where roulette’s 2.70% and 5.26% sit among other games, the ranking of every common casino bet by edge puts it alongside blackjack, baccarat and craps, and our cost-per-hour comparison lets you set your own stake.
What we could not verify, and our assumptions
- Table minimums and maximums. They vary by venue and by bet (outside bets often have different limits from inside bets), so we do not list them.
- Local names and extra bets. “Basket”, “top line” and “double street” mean different things in different places. We list the bet by the pockets it covers. Some tables offer extra announced bets (for example a five-chip jeu zéro or a ten-chip tiers); we only include the four classic call bets and neighbours, with placements as published by Wikipedia.
- The American basket 0-00-2. Wikipedia lists it as a trio on double-zero layouts; the engine does not model it, so it is not in the tables.
- Multiplier and “lightning” style roulette are not covered. Their payouts change from spin to spin and the providers do not publish the full distribution.
- Assumptions: a fair wheel with every pocket equally likely, standard payouts, and edges per dollar wagered.
