The Objective of Blackjack

The goal in blackjack is to beat the dealer — not to reach 21. Many beginners misunderstand this.

You beat the dealer by:
• Having a higher hand total than the dealer without going over 21, OR
• Staying under 21 while the dealer goes over 21 (busts)

If your hand exceeds 21, you bust and lose immediately — even if the dealer also busts later. This is where the casino's edge comes from.

Blackjack Card Values

What Is a Blackjack (Natural)?

A blackjack — also called a natural — is an Ace plus any 10-value card (10, J, Q, K) dealt as your first two cards. This is the best possible hand.

A blackjack pays 3:2 in standard games — if you bet $10, you win $15. Always check the payout before sitting down. Games that pay 6:5 on blackjack (common at some tables) are significantly worse for players.

How a Hand of Blackjack Works

Step 1 — Place your bet. You bet before any cards are dealt.

Step 2 — Initial deal. You receive two cards face-up. The dealer receives one card face-up and one face-down (the hole card).

Step 3 — Your turn. Based on your hand and the dealer's visible card, you choose an action (hit, stand, double, or split).

Step 4 — Dealer's turn. After all players act, the dealer reveals their hole card and must hit until reaching 17 or higher. The dealer has no choices — the rules are fixed.

Step 5 — Compare hands. Whoever is closer to 21 without going over wins.

Your Four Decisions Explained

Hit: Take another card. You can hit as many times as you like, but going over 21 means you bust and lose.

Stand: Keep your current hand and end your turn. The dealer then plays.

Double Down: Double your bet and receive exactly one more card. You cannot hit again after doubling. Use this when you have 10 or 11 and the dealer's card is weak.

Split: If you have two cards of the same value, you can split them into two separate hands by placing a second bet equal to your original. Each hand plays out independently. Always split Aces and 8s.

Hard Hands vs. Soft Hands

Hard hand: A hand with no Ace, or where the Ace counts as 1. Example: 7 + 9 = hard 16. If you hit and receive any card above 5, you bust.

Soft hand: A hand containing an Ace counted as 11. Example: Ace + 7 = soft 18. You cannot bust on the next card because the Ace will drop from 11 to 1 if needed.

Soft hands are more flexible and allow you to hit more aggressively. Soft 17 (Ace-6) should always be hit or doubled — never stand on soft 17.

What Is Insurance and Should You Take It?

When the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, the dealer offers 'insurance' — a side bet that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.

The answer: never take insurance. The house edge on insurance is 5.8% — far higher than the main game. Even if the dealer frequently has blackjack in your experience, the math over thousands of hands makes insurance a losing bet.

Blackjack Rules That Vary Between Games

Not all blackjack games have identical rules. Key variations to check:

Number of decks: Single-deck to 8-deck games exist. More decks slightly increases the house edge but makes counting cards harder.

Dealer hits or stands on soft 17: S17 (dealer stands on soft 17) is better for players. H17 (dealer hits soft 17) adds ~0.2% to the house edge.

Blackjack payout: 3:2 is standard and correct. 6:5 is bad — adds 1.4% to house edge.

Doubling restrictions: Some games only allow doubling on 10 or 11. Full doubling on any two cards is better for players.

Surrender: Late surrender (returning half your bet and folding certain bad hands) is available at some tables. It reduces losses on hands like 16 vs dealer 10.
