A

Ace
The highest-ranking card in most games. Worth 1 or 11 in blackjack (player chooses); 1 in Cribbage and Rummy; high in poker. Full guide
Action
The total amount of money wagered over a session. Casinos track action for comp calculations. Full guide
Aggregate Limit
The maximum total payout a casino will make on a single game round, often relevant in live dealer settings. Full guide
Ante
A mandatory bet placed by all players before cards are dealt. Used in poker tournaments and Seven-Card Stud. Full guide
All-In
Betting all remaining chips. In poker, a player can go all-in and contest a side pot limited to the chips they have. Full guide

B

Bankroll
The total amount of money set aside specifically for gambling. Should be separate from everyday finances. Full guide
Basic Strategy
The mathematically optimal play for every blackjack hand combination, reducing the house edge to ~0.5%. Full guide
Banker Bet
The Baccarat bet on the banker hand winning. Has the lowest house edge (1.06%) of any standard Baccarat bet. Full guide
Big Blind
The larger of two mandatory bets posted by players to the left of the dealer button before a poker hand. Full guide
Blackjack
1) The card game where players try to reach 21 without busting. 2) A two-card hand of Ace + 10-value card, paying 3:2. Full guide
Bonus
Additional funds offered by online casinos on deposits or as free play, typically with wagering requirements attached. Full guide
Burn Card
A card discarded face-down before community cards are dealt in poker, or before dealing in blackjack. Full guide
Bust
In blackjack, exceeding 21 — an immediate loss of the bet. Full guide
Button
The dealer button in poker. The player on the button acts last post-flop — the most advantageous position. Full guide

C

Call
In poker, matching the current bet amount to stay in the hand. Full guide
Card Counting
Tracking the ratio of high to low cards remaining in a blackjack shoe to gain a mathematical edge. Full guide
Cashback
A casino promotion returning a percentage of net losses to the player, often weekly. Generally more valuable than deposit bonuses. Full guide
Check
In poker, declining to bet while remaining in the hand. Only possible if no bet has been made in that round. Full guide
Chip
A token used in place of cash at casino tables. In tournaments, chips represent your tournament standing, not cash value. Full guide
Community Cards
Shared face-up cards in the centre of the table in Texas Hold'em and Omaha poker, used by all players to make their best hand. Full guide
Comp
Free goods or services offered to players by casinos based on wagering volume. Includes free plays, meals, hotel stays. Full guide
Crib (Cribbage)
The bonus hand in Cribbage formed from two discards from each player. Scored by the dealer. Full guide

D

D'Alembert System
A roulette betting system that increases bets by one unit after a loss and decreases by one unit after a win. Full guide
Dead Card
In Seven-Card Stud, a card that has been folded face-up and is no longer in the deck. Reduces drawing odds. Full guide
Deadwood
In Gin Rummy, unmelded cards that contribute to your point total. Lower is better. Full guide
Deck Penetration
How deep into a blackjack shoe cards are dealt before shuffling. Higher penetration is better for card counters. Full guide
Double Down
A blackjack move that doubles your bet in exchange for receiving exactly one more card. Full guide
Draw
A hand that needs additional cards to become strong (e.g., a flush draw needing one more suited card). Full guide

Edge Sorting
An advantage play technique exploiting imperfections in card printing to identify face-down card values. Considered cheating by casinos. Full guide
En Prison
A French roulette rule where even-money bets are held 'in prison' for one additional spin when 0 hits. Full guide
Even Money
A bet that pays 1:1 — you win exactly what you bet. Red/Black and High/Low in roulette; basic blackjack wins. Full guide
Expected Value (EV)
The average amount you expect to win or lose per bet over the long run. Negative EV means expected loss; positive EV means expected gain. Full guide

F

Fibonacci System
A roulette betting strategy using the Fibonacci sequence (1,1,2,3,5...) to determine bet sizes after losses. Full guide
Flat Bet
Betting the same amount every round, regardless of wins or losses. Minimises short-term variance. Full guide
Flop
The first three community cards dealt face-up in Texas Hold'em and Omaha. Full guide
Fold
In poker, discarding your hand and forfeiting the current pot. Costs no additional chips. Full guide
Foundation (Solitaire)
The four piles built by suit from Ace to King in Solitaire. The objective is to move all cards here. Full guide
Free Spins
Casino bonus rounds on slot machines where spins cost nothing. Usually come with wagering requirements. Full guide

Gambler's Fallacy
The false belief that past outcomes affect future independent events. Thinking red is 'due' after many blacks in roulette. Full guide
Gin (Gin Rummy)

GTO (Game Theory Optimal)

Hard Hand
A blackjack hand containing no Ace, or an Ace counted as 1 (e.g., hard 16 = 10+6, or 10+2+4). Full guide
Hi-Lo Count
The most common card counting system in blackjack: +1 for low cards (2-6), -1 for high cards (10-A), 0 for middle cards. Full guide
Hit
In blackjack, requesting another card from the dealer. Full guide
Hole Card
A card dealt face-down. In poker, your private cards. In blackjack, the dealer's face-down card. Full guide
House Edge
The mathematical advantage the casino holds over players, expressed as a percentage of each bet. Blackjack: 0.5%, Slots: 4-6%. Full guide
HUD (Heads-Up Display)
Software used in online poker to display statistics about opponents based on tracked hand history. Full guide

ICM (Independent Chip Model)
A model converting tournament chip counts into prize pool equity. Shows why chips have diminishing marginal value near the bubble. Full guide
Insurance
A blackjack side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace. Pays 2:1 but has a negative expected value for the player. Full guide

James Bond Strategy
A flat-bet roulette system covering 25/37 numbers (High + Line + Zero). Costs 20 units per round. Full guide
Jackpot
A large prize. Progressive jackpots grow with each bet until won. Fixed jackpots pay a set amount. Full guide

Knock (Gin Rummy)
Ending a Gin Rummy hand when your deadwood is 10 points or fewer. Opponent may then lay off cards onto your melds. Full guide

La Partage

Martingale System

Meld

Natural
1) In blackjack: a two-card 21 (Ace + 10-value), paying 3:2. 2) In baccarat: a first two-card total of 8 or 9, ending the hand immediately. Full guide
Nuts
In poker, the best possible hand given the community cards. 'I have the nuts' means the unbeatable hand. Full guide

O

Odds
The ratio of probability. In gambling: how likely an outcome is, and how much a bet pays relative to its probability. Full guide
Omaha
A poker variant where players receive four hole cards and must use exactly two plus exactly three community cards. Full guide
Outside Bets
Roulette bets covering large groups of numbers (Red/Black, High/Low, Dozens) with low but near even-money payouts. Full guide

P

Pair
Two cards of the same rank. In blackjack, a starting hand eligible to be split. In poker, one of the basic hand rankings. Full guide
Pegging (Cribbage)
The scoring phase in Cribbage where players alternately play cards and score points for 15s, pairs, runs, and go. Full guide
PLO
Pot-Limit Omaha — the most popular Omaha poker variant, where the maximum bet is the current pot size. Full guide
Position
In poker, your seat relative to the dealer button. Late position (acting last) is the most powerful. Full guide
Pot Odds
The ratio of the current pot to the cost of calling. Used to determine whether calling a bet is mathematically profitable. Full guide
Progressive Jackpot
A jackpot that grows with every bet placed until someone wins. Can reach millions but dramatically reduces base game RTP. Full guide
Push
A tie in blackjack — your bet is returned with no win or loss. Full guide

R

Raise
In poker, increasing the current bet size, forcing other players to call more, re-raise, or fold. Full guide
Rake
The casino's fee taken from poker pots, typically 2.5-5% up to a set maximum. Full guide
River
The fifth and final community card in Texas Hold'em and Omaha. The last betting round. Full guide
RTP (Return to Player)
The theoretical percentage of bets returned to players over time. A 96% RTP slot returns £96 per £100 wagered long-term. Full guide
Running Count
In card counting, the cumulative total of assigned card values seen so far in the shoe. Full guide

S

Semi-Bluff
Betting or raising with a drawing hand that can improve. Has both fold equity and equity to win if called. Full guide
Shoe
A device holding multiple decks of cards used in blackjack. Standard shoes contain 4, 6, or 8 decks. Full guide
Side Bet
An optional additional bet in blackjack, baccarat, or other games. Usually has a high house edge. Full guide
Soft Hand
A blackjack hand containing an Ace counted as 11 (e.g., Ace + 6 = soft 17). Cannot bust with one card. Full guide
Split
In blackjack, dividing a pair into two separate hands, each requiring an additional bet. Full guide
Stand
In blackjack, declining another card and keeping your current total. Full guide
Stock (Solitaire)
The face-down draw pile in Solitaire that players draw from when no Tableau moves are available. Full guide
Straight
In poker, five consecutive rank cards (e.g., 5-6-7-8-9) regardless of suit. Beats three of a kind and two pair. Full guide
Surrender
A blackjack option to fold your hand and receive half your bet back before any cards are drawn. Full guide

T

Tell
An unconscious behaviour that reveals information about a poker player's hand strength. Full guide
Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same rank in poker. Known as 'trips' when using one hole card and a pair on the board. Full guide
True Count
In card counting, the running count divided by the number of remaining decks — a more accurate measure of the advantage. Full guide
Turn
The fourth community card in Texas Hold'em and Omaha. Follows the flop, precedes the river. Full guide

U

Undercut (Gin Rummy)
When the non-knocking player's deadwood is equal to or lower than the knocker's. Opponent wins plus a 25-point bonus. Full guide
Under the Gun (UTG)
The first player to act pre-flop in poker — the position directly to the left of the big blind. The hardest position. Full guide

V

Variance
The statistical measure of how far results deviate from expected value. High variance = big swings; low variance = steady results. Full guide
VPIP
Voluntarily Put In Pot — a poker stat measuring how often a player enters a pot pre-flop. High VPIP = loose player. Full guide
Volatility
In slots, a measure of how frequently and in what amounts wins occur. High volatility = rare but large wins. Full guide

W

Wagering Requirements
The number of times a bonus must be bet before withdrawing winnings. 30x on £100 bonus = must wager £3,000. Full guide
Wild Card
