How to Place the James Bond Bet

The classic James Bond strategy uses 20 units per round, divided across three bets:

• 14 units on High (19-36) — the largest portion, backing 18 numbers
• 5 units on the Line Bet (13-14-15-16-17-18) — backing 6 numbers in the 13-18 range
• 1 unit on 0 — insurance against the zero

Total coverage: 25 numbers out of 37 (on European roulette) — 67.6% of the wheel.

Win/Loss Probabilities

When 19-36 hits (18 numbers): You win 14 units × 1:1 = +£14, minus the 6 units on the other bets = net +6 units profit. Probability: 18/37 = 48.6%

When 13-18 hits (6 numbers): You win 5 units × 5:1 = +£30, minus 15 units on other bets = net +10 units profit. Probability: 6/37 = 16.2%

When 0 hits: You win 1 unit × 35:1 = +£35, minus 19 units on other bets = net +16 units profit. Probability: 1/37 = 2.7%

When 1-12 hits (12 numbers): All bets lose — net -20 units. Probability: 12/37 = 32.4%

Expected value per 20-unit round: (6 × 18/37) + (10 × 6/37) + (16 × 1/37) + (-20 × 12/37) = -0.54 units per round. This is exactly -2.70% of 20 — the standard house edge.

What Happens When 1-12 Hits

The system's primary weakness: numbers 1-12 cause a complete loss of all 20 units.

Probability: 12/37 = 32.4% — roughly one in three spins results in a total loss.

Some players combine James Bond with a progression: after a loss, increase the total bet. However, this introduces the same escalation risks as other progression systems. The James Bond bet itself is flat — adding progression converts it into an entirely different system.

The system's broad coverage creates the illusion of safety — most spins produce small wins. However, the large losses when 1-12 hits offset those wins. Over time, the house edge of -2.70% applies to every unit wagered.

James Bond vs Other Roulette Systems

Vs Martingale: James Bond is flat-bet — no escalation after losses. Lower risk per session but no recovery mechanism for losing sequences.

Vs D'Alembert/Fibonacci: No progression means no escalation risk, but also no adjustment for streaks. Pure flat-betting.

James Bond covers more of the wheel than any other standard combination strategy, but the uncovered 1-12 range (12 numbers) creates the corresponding risk of large losses.

Practical use: The system is fun, structured, and produces wins on most spins. For entertainment-oriented play with a clear structure, it works well. As a long-term profit strategy, it does not — no roulette system does.

Tips for Using the James Bond Strategy

Play European or French roulette only. American roulette's double zero (00) adds a 13th number that is not covered, increasing the loss percentage from 32.4% to 34.2%. Always choose European (2.70%) over American (5.26%).

Flat-bet it — do not progress. The James Bond bet is designed as a flat system. Adding progressive elements increases both complexity and risk.

Set a spin limit. The 1-12 loss sequence can hit multiple times in a row. Decide in advance the maximum losses you'll accept per session.

Use La Partage if available. French roulette with La Partage on the even-money portion reduces your edge slightly, though the James Bond bet is mostly non-even-money. Even so, French tables are preferred.
