The Goal of Poker

Win the pot — the total chips bet by all players in a hand. You win by either:
1. Having the best five-card hand at showdown (when remaining players reveal cards), OR
2. Being the last player remaining after all others have folded

You don't need the best hand to win — this is what makes poker a game of skill.

Texas Hold'em — Step by Step

Setup: 2–10 players, standard 52-card deck, dealer chip rotates clockwise each hand.

The Blinds: The two players left of the dealer post forced bets — the Small Blind (half the minimum) and the Big Blind (full minimum). This creates a pot before cards are dealt.

Step 1 — Pre-Flop: Each player receives 2 private cards (hole cards). Betting begins with the player left of the Big Blind. Options: Fold, Call, or Raise.

Step 2 — The Flop: Three community cards are dealt face up. Betting begins with the first active player left of the dealer.

Step 3 — The Turn: One more community card is dealt face up. Another betting round.

Step 4 — The River: The fifth and final community card is dealt. Final betting round.

Showdown: If two or more players remain, they reveal their cards. Best 5-card hand from any combination of 7 cards (2 hole + 5 community) wins.

Table Position — Why It Matters

Position is one of the most important concepts in poker. Players who act later have more information:

Early position (UTG — Under the Gun): First to act pre-flop. Most disadvantageous — play only strong hands.
Middle position: More flexibility. Can play stronger range of hands.
Late position (Hijack, Cutoff, Button): Act last — maximum information. Can play wider range of hands profitably.
Button (Dealer): Best position at the table. Acts last on every street after the flop.

A mediocre hand in late position is often more profitable than a strong hand in early position.

5 Beginner Strategy Rules

These five rules will immediately improve your game:

• Play tight — fold most hands pre-flop. Most beginners play too many hands.
• Play in position — prefer acting late rather than early in each round.
• Bet for value or as a bluff — never bet without a clear reason.
• Learn the pot odds — if calling costs $10 into a $40 pot, you need 20%+ equity to justify it.
• Quit when emotionally tilted — bad decisions made on tilt cost more than any bad beat.
