How to Play Snap
Snap is one of the simplest and most energetic card games ever made — players flip cards simultaneously and race to shout 'Snap!' when two matching cards appear. It takes seconds to learn, requires no reading or counting, and is perfect for all ages from 3 upwards.
What You Need
- 1 standard 52-card deck (remove Jokers for younger players, keep them as wild cards for older players)
- 2 or more players
- Quick reflexes
Setup
Shuffle the deck thoroughly and deal all cards face-down as evenly as possible between all players. Players hold their cards in a face-down stack — do not look at them.
Each player now has their own pile. Place them in front of you. A shared central area is used for a community pile in some variants.
How to Play
Players take turns flipping the top card from their pile face-up onto a central discard pile (or their own face-up pile, depending on variant).
Turns go clockwise. The flip must be done facing away from you first — flip the card outward so other players see it at the same time as you do. This prevents cheating by looking first.
When a match occurs: The moment two consecutive face-up cards show the same rank (two Aces, two 7s, two Queens, etc.), all players race to slap their hand on the pile and shout 'SNAP!'
The fastest player wins all the cards in the face-up pile and adds them to the bottom of their hand pile.
The goal: Collect all the cards. A player who runs out of cards is eliminated. The last player with cards wins.

Matching Rules
In standard Snap, a match occurs when two cards of the same rank are played consecutively:
- Two Kings → Snap!
- Two 4s → Snap!
- Two Jacks → Snap!
Suit does not matter in standard rules.
What Happens When You Call Snap Incorrectly?
If a player calls 'Snap!' when the top two cards do not match, a penalty applies:
Common penalty rule: The player who called incorrectly must give one card from their pile to each other player.
This penalty keeps the game honest and discourages reckless calls.
Popular Variations
Snap Pool: Instead of each player having their own discard pile, all cards go into one central pool. When Snap is called, the winner takes the entire pool. Faster and more chaotic.
Joker Snap: Jokers are wild — a Joker matches any card. Add tension and unpredictability.
Colour Snap: Match by colour (red/black) instead of rank. Easier for very young children.
Speed Snap: All players flip simultaneously rather than taking turns. Pure reaction speed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many players can play Snap?
2 or more. It works best with 2–6 players. With more players, use two decks.
What age is Snap suitable for?
From around age 3 upwards. Colour Snap is easiest for the youngest players; standard rank-matching suits ages 5+.
What if two players call Snap at the same time?
The pile is placed face-down in the centre as a 'Snap pot.' The next player to correctly call Snap wins the pot in addition to the regular pile.
Do you need a full deck to play Snap?
No — you can play with any number of cards. Fewer cards make for shorter games.
